Gym Community and Exercise Adherence
Have you ever struggled to stick to a workout routine? If you answered “no”, good for you, but you are in the minority! If you answered “yes”, there is no shame in that! Sticking to a workout routine is HARD and requires many different things to align. One of the biggest barriers to long-term exercise adherence is lack of support. It’s hard enough to self-motivate to workout, and doing so without some sort of support system makes it even more challenging.
One way to ensure you have ongoing support throughout your fitness journey is by attending group classes. Some people may hate the thought of working out in front of others, but the reality is that everyone is most likely focused on the workout. Group classes give you a sense of comradery, and with that, an automatic support system. You see a majority of the same people in class each time, and when you all suffer together, it’s easy to bond over it! Having this support system removes a big barrier to working out. Additionally, having this automatic community makes it more likely to turn your attendance into habit. Suffering together can make the suffering fun!
It’s easy to convince yourself that skipping the workout is “fine” or that “you’ll do it tomorrow”, but when you have other people to show up with and for, it becomes a lot more difficult to justify skipping. Group classes are a great way to ensure you remain consistent and accountable to yourself and your physical and mental health. If you’ve been struggling with your workout routine, maybe it’s time to switch it up and try a group class!
